1925 New York Football Founding Year Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
The history and tradition of the New York Giants is linked to pro football itself for one might have perished without the other in the early days of the National Football League. The late Tim Mara, now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, purchased a franchise for $500 in 1925 and before the Giants' first season had ended, he had invested another $25,000 to keep the franchise alive. A team in New York was thus assured. To a young NFL that was seeking national media and fan attendance, a team in the nation's largest city was an absolute must. The value of New York exposure was clearly demonstrated in December of the first season when more than 70,000 turned out at the Polo Grounds to see the Giants play the Chicago Bears, who had just signed Red Grange, the most famous pro football player of the 1920s.

1972 New York Raiders Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
Capitalizing on the lack of hockey teams in a number of major American cities and mid-level Canadian cities, the WHA was the first major league to compete with the NHL. The New York Raiders were intended to be the WHA's flagship franchise, and the team was initially slated to play in the brand-new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island. However, Nassau County was holding out for an NHL franchise and when the NHL finally responded by hastily awarding a franchise to Long Island—the New York Islanders - the lease with the Coliseum was structured in such a way to effectively lock out non-NHL teams, forcing the Raiders to play at Madison Square Garden.
Unsurprisingly, the Raiders couldn't compete with the Rangers and due to poor attendance, the owners defaulted, and the league ended up taking control of the team midway through the season. Following the season, New York real estate mogul Ralph Brent bought the team and renamed it the New York Golden Blades.

1973 New York Golden Blades Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
After a failed season as the New York Titans, New York real estate mogul Ralph Brent bought the team and renamed it the New York Golden Blades. The team replaced their original orange and blue uniforms with purple and gold uniforms of a unique design, and to coincide with the new identity, the team started the season wearing white skates with gold-colored blades.
The situation improved very little from the previous season; at times, the Golden Blades played before crowds of only 500 people (in an 18,000-seat arena). Sinking in debt, Brent surrendered the team to the league in late November, just twenty games into the season, and the WHA decided to move the team mid-season to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, renaming it the Jersey Knights.

1960 New York Football Founding Year Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
Established as one of the founding teams of the upstart American Football League (AFL) in 1960, the franchise—known as the Titans until 1963—was marred by financial struggles and athletic mediocrity as the team competed with the older Giants franchise in the New York market. One of the lone bright spots in the team’s early years was wide receiver Don Maynard, who joined the team in its inaugural season and would set most major receiving records during the course of his Hall of Fame career. In 1963 the newly renamed Jets hired head coach Weeb Ewbank (who had guided the Colts to championships in the late 1950s) and in 1965 acquired Namath, which marked the beginning of the team’s move to respectability.

1974 New York Stars WFL Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
The upstart World Football League (1974-1975) made its debut in the Big Apple in Week 2 of the league’s inaugural season of 1974. WFL founder and Commissioner Gary Davidson hoped that his league would become a formidable rival to the NFL, much as the AFL had in the 1960’s. Another model was the World Hockey Association (1972-1979), co-founded by Davidson in 1971, which had already become a thorn in the side of the National Hockey League by challenging the established circuit for top free agents and expansion markets. To be relevant, Davidson needed the WFL to work in major media markets like New York City. But the New York Stars, a franchise given away for free by Davidson to one of his World Hockey Association connections, turned out to be one of the WFL’s biggest misfires.
