The Story

The Arizona Wranglers played at Sun Devil Stadium from 1982 to 1985 before eventually folding and moving operations to Tulsa Oklahoma in 1985 to become the Oklahoma Outlaws. With players like Frank Corral & Alan Risher donning the blue and red in Arizona, the Arizona Wranglers were playing an old school style of football that the present NFL could learn a thing or two from. When the USFL lawsuit against the NFL crumbled in 1986, so too did the glory of the Arizona Wranglers.

      The Story

Debuting in the inaugural season of the USFL, the Boston Breakers were the city's spring/summer season pro football club. After being rejected to play at Boston's tow best stadiums of the time ( Sullivan Stadium, home of the Patriots, and Harvard Stadium), the team settled on Nickerson Field at Boston University.

Despite fielding a fairly solid team (they went 11-7 that season), playing in Nickerson doomed the team in Boston. It was so small that the Breakers lost money even when they sold out, as visiting teams got a portion of the gate proceeds. When the Breakers were unable to secure a lease in any of the larger stadiums in the Boston area following the season, the team was moved to New Orleans.

        The Story

"The Chicago Blitz were a hard working group of guys. I enjoyed it. The only problem was, the man who bought the team never paid anybody, including the coaches. We had to chip in to buy toilet paper for the restrooms."

        - Marv Levy, former Chicago Blitz head coach

One of the original 12 United States Football League franchises, the Chicago Blitz were one of the strongest teams in the USFL's inaugural season, finishing tied for first place in their division. But despite their success on the field, they averaged only 18,100 fans that season (the league average was about 30,000). As a result, the Blitz became part of what many call the craziest trade in sports history.

In the seasons to follow, attendance only decreased, which prompted the ownership group, who was losing millions of dollars each season, to finally give up and sold the team to the league for pennies on the dollar. The team folded for good prior to the 1986 season.

                    The Story

Conceived by businessman David Dixon, who saw a market for a professional football league that would play in the summer, the USFL was one of the grandest failures in the history of American professional sports. Although many agree the product on the field was solid, most of the franchises faced financial problems and instability from the beginning due to poor ticket sales and bloated player salaries (there was no salary cap). In addition, some franchises had difficulty securing leases in stadiums that were also used by NFL teams, forcing them to scramble to find alternate venues which in some cases turned out to be the team's downfall (i.e. the Boston Breakers playing at BU's soccer field).

After an embarrassing lawsuit led by Donald Trump (owner of the New Jerseys Generals) against the NFL, the USFL folded after only 3 seasons. What we're left with are some incredible 80's-style uniforms and team logos to look back on and, most importantly, one of the best league logos of all time.

The Washington Federals played at RFK Stadium from 1983 to 1985 before eventually folding and moving operations to Orlando after the 1984 season to become the Renegades. With players like Jeff Postell & Ricky Claitt donning the green and black in Washington, the Washington Federals were playing an old school style of football that the present NFL could learn a thing or two from. When the USFL lawsuit against the NFL crumbled in 1986, so too did the glory of the Washington Federals

                              The Story

When the Breakers were unable to secure a lease in any of the larger stadiums in the Boston area following the 1983 season, the team was moved to New Orleans where they played in the spacious Superdome, also home to the NFL's Saints. The team was a success in New Orleans, boasting some of the league's highest attendance numbers, however after the season, the league owners decided to move the season to the fall starting in 1986. Knowing that the Breakers could not hope to compete with the Saints, the ownership group opted to move before the team to Portland rather than play a lame duck season in New Orleans.

                                                            The Story

The Original National Lacrosse League played from 1974-75, and was conceived by hockey owners as a means to fill their arenas in the summer months, the league was not very successful, with only Philadelphia and Montreal drawing sizeable crowds. The league folded in 1976 after the demise of several franchises and the inability of the Montreal franchise to play home games in 1976 because of the Summer Olympics.

Besides featuring NHL players such as Rick Dudley (Rochester) and Doug Favell (Philadelphia), the league also included Bruce Arena (Montreal)—who went on to greater fame as the head coach of the United States men's national soccer team.

Crafted with the intention of being the softest shirt in your lineup, our signature tees are cut for a modern fit and printed with inks that actually blend into the fabrics giving it more character with every wash.

Ned Dowd, who played for the Johnston Jets, was the brother of the film's screenwriter, Nancy Dowd who was inspired to write the screenplay based off of Ned's experiences in a league where bench-clearing brawls and fights between players and fans were the norm on Friday and Saturday nights in arenas in cities like Syracuse, Binghamton and Erie.

The league's championship trophy, the Lockhart Cup, was last awarded on April 10, 1977, to the Syracuse Blazers and has since gone missing. Its last known whereabouts was reported to be in the basement of Danny Belisle, the coach of the Blazers in the 1976–77 season.

                                                            The Story

The San Antonio Thunder played at North East Stadium from 1975 to 1976 before eventually folding in 1976. Even though the San Antonio Thunder were a strong team in the 1976 season, it wasn't enough to keep the white and blue in San Antonio. With players like Laszlo Harsanyi & Gerry Ingram donning the white and blue in San Antonio, the San Antonio Thunder should have been able to fill seats. The reality however was much different and with low attendance, the San Antonio Thunder soon folded and became no more.

                                                            The Story

There were star-studded connections through part-owner Elton John and the famous players like George Best and Johan Cruyff.

The team found immediate success, averaging almost twice as many spectators as the league average, played in the first nationally televised game in the U.S., and won the NASL championship in their debut season.

The Aztecs had mixed success between 1974 and 1981, when the team folded due to instability within its ownership group.

The San Jose Earthquakes began as an expansion franchise who was originally set to play in San Francisco; but slow season ticket sales led to a late switch to San Jose. The switch to sports-starved San Jose was an immediate hit, and the Earthquakes led the league with attendance over 15,000 per game in 1974, double the league average. The team's success led Spartan Stadium to be chosen as site of the first NASL Soccer Bowl in 1975.

The San Diego Sockers played at Jack Murphy Stadium from 1978 to 1996 before eventually folding in 1996. Even though the San Diego Sockers were a strong team in the 1981 season, it wasn't enough to keep the gold and blue in San Diego. With players like Laszlo Harsanyi & Gerry Ingram donning the gold and blue in San Diego, the San Diego Sockers should have been able to fill seats. The reality however was much different and with low attendance, the San Diego Sockers soon folded and became no more.

                                                            The Story

The Stingers were a CBA expansion franchise starting play in 1983 who were started by stock broker Jeffrey Fischer who, it turned out, used stolen funds from his clients to start the franchise. He got away with it for an entire season before the Securities & Exchange Commission caught up to him in June 1984.

On the court, the Stingers finished the 1983-84 campaign tied for last place in the CBA’s Eastern Division with a 16-28 record.

In July 1986, new ownership purchased the franchise and relocated the team to Charleston, West Virginia for the 1986-87 CBA season.

Starting in Bangor Maine as the Lumberjacks, the team was relocated to Brockton, Mass. and were renamed the Bay State Bombardiers. After one season in Brockton, the Bombardiers moved their home games to Worcester, Mass. The 1985-86 season was the most successful in franchise history, going 30-18 (third-best in the CBA) during the regular season. The Bombardiers eliminated the Baltimore Lightning in the first round of the playoffs, but fell to eventual champion Tampa Bay Thrillers in the Eastern Division Finals.

Beginning life as the Tampa Bay Thrillers in 1984 (and winning back-to-back CBA championships in '85 and '86), the franchise moved to Rapid City in 1987 where they would go on to play eight seasons. They returned to the finals twice in 1990 and 1992 but never won another title. During the summer of 1995 the team moved back to Florida (West Palm Beach this time) and became the Florida Beach Dogs. The franchise went out of business in 1997.
