The Story

The Cleveland Lumberjacks franchise history goes all the way back to the formation of the Muskegon Zephyrs in 1960 - the early days of the IHL. The franchise spent more than 30 seasons in Muskegon, but in the early 1990’s, the IHL began to attract wealthier investors and began to move beyond its upper Midwest roots. Cities like Muskegon were left behind as the league expanded into major cities with promises of large new arenas and much larger fan bases. So in 1992, the Lumberjacks were uprooted out of Muskegon and moved to Cleveland, where the new 20,000-seat Gund Arena was set to open in 1994. The team folded in 2001.
