1994 U.S. Soccer 'Denim' Shorts
The year was 1994. The United States was about to host its first World Cup in history. The stage was perfectly set for the U.S. men's national team to make a bold statement in front of the entire world that, finally, U.S. Soccer had arrived. Gone were the days of being a laughing stock and doormat of the international stage! It was time to get serious.
So when the meeting with adidas finally arrived in the Spring of '94 to give the U.S. players the first look at their uniforms for the World Cup, the expectations were high...very high. And when the curtain was pulled back........DENIM. Denim print jerseys and denim print shorts. What the f*ck?!?!
"It was the longest silence I’d ever heard from our team,” remembers forward Eric Wynalda. Then, nervous/angry laughter broke out. “I’d be lying if I said people weren’t looking around for the hidden camera,” said Alexi Lalas."They were hideous."
Nevertheless, the Americans took the field for the '94 World Cup in the now infamous 'Denim Kit' which included these shorts which were worn with the 'Bacon' jerseys and the denim jersey which was worn with red shorts. Beautiful or hideous? We're going with gorgeous.
