The Story
The Maine Nordiques played in the North American Hockey League from 1973-1977. The NAHL was the inspiration for the movie Slap Shot written by Nancy Dowd, whose brother Ned played for the Johnston Jets. The film was based on Ned's experiences in a league where bench-clearing brawls and fights between players and fans were the norm on game nights at arenas in blue collar cities like Syracuse, Binghamton and Erie.
