The Continental Football League, which absorbed teams from both the United and Atlantic Coast Football Leagues when it was formed in 1965, was originally formed as a competitor to the NFL, operating in smaller market cities. The league lasted for five seasons, seeing its run come to an end with the merger of the NFL-AFL in 1970.
