The Story

The NFL's oldest franchise, the Cardinals formed in 1898, when a Chicago neighborhood group gathered to play, originally calling themselves the 'Morgan Athletic Club.' The club played with used jerseys acquired from the University of Chicago, whose faded maroon from multiple washings was described as "cardinal red" - so together with a move to a field on Racine Avenue, the team became the Racine Street Cardinals. In 1920, the team became a charter member of the American Professional Football Association (APFA), which two years later was renamed the National Football League.
