The Story

With players like Rick Barry & Warren Armstrong gracing the court for the Washington, D.C. it's a shame they didn't make it to the big show. Washington Caps played in Washington Coliseum from 1969 to 1970 before eventually folding and moving operations to Norfolk in 1970 to become the Virginia Squires. When the ABA and NBA merged in 1976 the glory of the Washington Caps was retired to the rafters of Basketballs past glory.

Crafted with the intention of being the softest shirt in your lineup, our signature tees are made with premium airlume (for softness) and ringspun (for durability) cotton combined with poly to make the perfect tee👌 that wears and feels like a well-worn favorite. Our garments are printed with inks that actually blend into the fabric giving it more character and true vintage look with every wash.

    The Story

The Washington Federals played at RFK Stadium from 1983 to 1985 before eventually folding and moving operations to Orlando after the 1984 season to become the Renegades. With players like Jeff Postell & Ricky Claitt donning the green and black in Washington, the Washington Federals were playing an old school style of football that the present NFL could learn a thing or two from. When the USFL lawsuit against the NFL crumbled in 1986, so too did the glory of the Washington Federals

        The Story

Awarded an inactive franchise in Boston in July 1932, owner George Preston Marshall originally named the team the "Braves" because it used Braves Field (home of the National League Boston baseball team). When the team moved to Fenway Park in July 1933, the name was changed to Redskins. A bizarre situation occurred in 1936, when the Redskins won the NFL Eastern division championship but Marshall, unhappy with the fan support in Boston, moved the championship game against Green Bay to the Polo Grounds in New York. Their home field advantage taken away by their owner, the Redskins lost. Not surprisingly, the Redskins moved to Washington, D.C., for the 1937 season. Games were played in Griffith Stadium with the opener on September 16, 1937, being played under flood lights.

            The Story

The Washington Diplomats played at Pat Cunningham Stadium from 1974 to 1980 before eventually folding in 1980. Even though the Washington Diplomats were a strong team in the 1979 season, it wasn't enough to keep the red and white in Washington D.C.. With players like George Ross & Maurice Slater donning the red and white in Washington D.C., the Washington Diplomats should have been able to fill seats. The reality however was much different and with low attendance, the Washington Diplomats soon folded and became no more.

                The Story

The Washington Wave were one of the founding teams in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League (renamed in 1989 to the Major Indoor Lacrosse League). They played in the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. The team's first coach, Bud Beardmore was the respected former coach who won two national titles with the University of Maryland. The franchise folded after the 1989 season.

From a 1987 Sports Illustrated article:

"For all you jaded NHL and NBA fans who complain that the regular season seems meaningless, welcome to the Eagle League, a new bargain-basement box lacrosse outfit in which the regular season is meaningless: All four franchises made the playoffs, and in the title game on Saturday at the Capital Centre near Washington, neither opponent had a winning record. In fact, the team that won the championship had tied for last in the standings.

Eagle League lacrosse differs from the field variety in that the goals are smaller, the sticks are shorter and each squad has 6 players instead of 10. It's played in a hockey rink on artificial turf and paced by a 45-second shot clock. But while field lacrosse is a comparatively genteel sport played by alleged gentlemen, pro box offers a brand of play that's often downright vicious."

The Seattle Sounders played at Spartan Stadium from 1974 to 1983 before eventually folding in 1983. Even though the Seattle Sounders were a strong team in the 1981 season, it wasn't enough to keep the white and blue stripes in Seattle. With players like Barry Watling & Willie Penman donning the white and blue stripes in Seattle, the Seattle Sounders should have been able to fill seats.

                                The Story

The franchise originated in late 1973 as the Washington Ambassadors, part of the startup WFL that would challenge the NFL starting in the summer of 1974.  Original owner Joseph Wheeler couldn’t secure a lease or put together financing in Washington, so the team became the Virginia Ambassadors in the spring of 1974.  But Wheeler couldn’t get things off the ground in Norfolk, VA either, so in May 1974 he sold the team to Loudd’s Orlando-based syndicate.
