In one of the most iconic scenes, player-coach Reg Dunlop taunts Ducks goalie Hanrahan using his wife as the bait. Hanrahan takes, it leaving his net wide open to go after Dunlop and allowing the Chiefs to get the go-ahead goal.

      The Story

The Edmonton Drillers played at Commonwealth Stadium from 1979 to 1982 before eventually folding in 1982. Even though the Edmonton Drillers were a strong team in the 1979 season, it wasn't enough to keep the orange and white in Edmonton. With players like Paul Roe & Derek Evans donning the orange and white in Edmonton, the Edmonton Drillers should have been able to fill seats. The reality however was much different and with low attendance, the Edmonton Drillers soon folded and became no more.

            The Story

The Original National Lacrosse League played from 1974-75, and was conceived by hockey owners as a means to fill their arenas in the summer months, the league was not very successful, with only Philadelphia and Montreal drawing sizeable crowds. The league folded in 1976 after the demise of several franchises and the inability of the Montreal franchise to play home games in 1976 because of the Summer Olympics.

Besides featuring NHL players such as Rick Dudley (Rochester) and Doug Favell (Philadelphia), the league also included Bruce Arena (Montreal)—who went on to greater fame as the head coach of the United States men's national soccer team.

              The Story

If the teams of the NAHL (1973-1977) look familiar, it's because the league served as the inspiration for one of the greatest sports movies of all time: Slap Shot. Ned Dowd, who played for the Johnston Jets, was the brother of the film's screenwriter, Nancy Dowd who was inspired to write the screenplay based off of Ned's experiences in a league where bench-clearing brawls and fights between players and fans were the norm on Friday and Saturday nights in arenas in cities like Syracuse, Binghamton and Erie.

The league's championship trophy, the Lockhart Cup, was last awarded on April 10, 1977, to the Syracuse Blazers and has since gone missing. Its last known whereabouts was reported to be in the basement of Danny Belisle, the coach of the Blazers in the 1976–77 season.

Crafted with the intention of being the softest shirt in your lineup, our signature tees are made with premium airlume (for softness) and ringspun (for durability) cotton combined with poly to make the perfect tee👌 that wears and feels like a well-worn favorite. Our garments are printed with inks that actually blend into the fabric giving it more character and true vintage look with every wash.

The man. The myth. The legend. Ogie Ogilthorpe was once the most feared player in minor league hockey, and the Syracuse Bulldogs bring him out of retirement to battle against the Chiefs in what turns out to be an absolute blood bath.

"This young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, I guess that's more than most 21-year-olds can handle. Number six, Ogie Oglethorpe!"

                    The Story

In 1973, California attorney Gary Davidson, who’d helped to found both the ABA and WHA, had an idea for a pro football league that could bring more jobs for players unable to crack an NFL or CFL roster, offer cheaper rates for franchises than the NFL's $16 million price tag, and would revolutionize scoring with new offensive rules guaranteed to eclipse the field goal addictions crimping most NFL contests. 1974 saw the World Football League hit the fields across America. in 1975...it folded.

                      The Story

The Houston Texans were a blink-and-you-missed-’em franchise in the World Football League during the summer of 1974.  The Texans played only five home games at the Astrodome before team owner R. Steven Arnold ran out of dough and unloaded the team to new investors in Shreveport, Louisiana, where the team moved in mid-season 1974.  The Texans’ best crowd – announced at 31,227 on August 15, 1974 – turned out for Nickel Beer Night at the Astrodome. In the Texans’ most infamous episode, owner Steve Arnold interjected himself into a contract dispute between the NFL’s Houston Oilers and gargantuan defensive end John Matuszak, the #1 overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft.  Claiming to have found a loophole in his Oilers contract, Matuszak bolted across town to the Texans’ offices on August 28th, 1974 and signed a multi-year deal.  He suited up for the Texans at the Astrodome that night against the New York Stars and played five downs before sheriff’s deputies showed up and served him with a restraining order on the sidelines.  That marked the beginning and end of The Tooz’s WFL adventure. He was back in the NFL a month or so later.

                        The Story

After a failed season as the New York Titans, New York real estate mogul Ralph Brent bought the team and renamed it the New York Golden Blades. The team replaced their original orange and blue uniforms with purple and gold uniforms of a unique design, and to coincide with the new identity, the team started the season wearing white skates with gold-colored blades.

The situation improved very little from the previous season; at times, the Golden Blades played before crowds of only 500 people (in an 18,000-seat arena). Sinking in debt, Brent surrendered the team to the league in late November, just twenty games into the season, and the WHA decided to move the team mid-season to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, renaming it the Jersey Knights.

                          The Story

Capitalizing on the lack of hockey teams in a number of major American cities and mid-level Canadian cities, the WHA was the first major league to compete with the NHL. The Los Angeles Sharks entered the league in 1972, playing at the L.A. Sports Arena. The Sharks graced the ice until 1974 when the team was moved to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Blades.

                            The Story

The Memphis Rogues played at the Liberty Bowl from 1978 to 1980 before eventually folding in 1980. Even though the Memphis Rogues won the Semifinals in the NASL Indoor Western Division in 1979, it wasn't enough to keep the white and red in Memphis. With players like Tony Burns & Bobby Thomson donning the white and red in Memphis, the Memphis Rogues should have been able to fill seats. The reality however was much different and with low attendance, the Memphis Rogues soon folded and became no more.

                              The Story

The San Jose Earthquakes began as an expansion franchise who was originally set to play in San Francisco; but slow season ticket sales led to a late switch to San Jose. The switch to sports-starved San Jose was an immediate hit, and the Earthquakes led the league with attendance over 15,000 per game in 1974, double the league average. The team's success led Spartan Stadium to be chosen as site of the first NASL Soccer Bowl in 1975.

Thanks to Ned Braden's striptease which led to Syracuse Bulldogs captain McCracken to verbally assault the referee and result in a win-by-forfeit for the Chiefs when the ref calls the game, Charlestown hoists its first Federal League Cup (which was skated down the ice held high by the naked Ned Braden).

                                      The Story

The Long Island Cougars played in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) from 1973-1975.

                                        The Story

The CBA expansion franchise began as the Hawaii Volcanos in 1979 (yes, it is spelled "Volcanos," even though the proper plural spelling for volcano is "volcanoes") and oddly was placed in the CBA's North Division with teams from Alaska, Rochester NY and Maine. Predictably, after one season with attendance disappointing and travel costs very high (most of their opponents were over 5,000 miles from Hawaii), the Volcanos shifted to Billings, Montana for the 1980-81 campaign.

                                            The Story

The Vancouver Whitecaps played at Empire Stadium from 1973 to 1984 before eventually folding in 1984. Even though the Vancouver Whitecaps won the NASL Western Division Conference in 1979, it wasn't enough to keep the blue and white in Vancouver. With players like Greg Weber & Buzz Parsons donning the blue and white in Vancouver, the Vancouver Whitecaps should have been able to fill seats. The reality however what much different and with low attendance, the Vancouver Whitecaps soon folded and became no more.

                                                The Story

After his Memphis Tams posted the worst record in all of pro basketball during the 1973-74 season, team owner Charlie Finley refused to pay any more bills. The ABA itself was keeping the operation afloat. After four years of futility, it seemed impossible that a Memphis ABA franchise could continue, but with an ABA/NBA merger imminent, ABA Commissioner Mike Storen decided to step in. Given his past success building successful franchises in Indiana and Kentucky, Storen felt that he could turn around the Memphis franchise and make it viable for the NBA.

Storen found several new local investors for the team (including Isaac Hayes and Al Wilson of Stax Records and Kemmons Wilson of Holiday Inn) and gave the franchise a complete facelift, including the nickname which he changed to the "Sounds."

Despite making the playoffs, it was looking to finally be the end of the line for the ABA in Memphis. The league office gave the city of Memphis a strict deadline of June 1, 1975 to sell 4,000 season tickets, find new investors, and secure a more favorable lease at the Mid-South Coliseum. Predictably, none of this happened. The league took over the franchise and, in August 1975, the Sounds were sold to several businessmen in Baltimore who initially called their team the "Baltimore Hustlers" but then, with force from the league, changed to the "Baltimore Claws."

Originally the Memphis Pros (arguable the least creative team in professional sports), In 1972, the team was purchased by Charles O. Finley, who also owned the Oakland A's and former NHL team Calfornia Golden Seals. In an attempt to drive some interest, they hosted a "Rename the Team" contest, with the TAMs winning the vote.  The nickname was an acronym for Tennessee – Arkansas – Mississippi, and the logo was a tam o'shanter-style hat in white, green and gold, which were also the new team colors, shared with the Athletics and Golden Seals.

                                                    The Story

After a single season hiatus where Pittsburgh's ABA franchise moved to Minnesota, they returned back in 1969 as the Pittsburgh Pipers once again. A fresh start with a name change came for 1970-71 as the Pittsburgh Condors - but that didn't seem to improve things for the franchise as they had two terrible losing seasons, and to add insult to injury, became infamous for two promotional stunts (including giving away every unsold seat for free during one losing streak that sadly still only filled the arena 75%) that went terribly awry. The ABA cancelled the Pittsburgh franchise after the 1971-72 season.

                                                      The Story

Only in the 1970s would a pro football team wear magenta and orange - and that's exactly what the Southern California Sun of the World Football League hit the field with in 1974. Their good looks seemed to work as the Sun had two winning seasons in the only two years that the WFL existed - even winning the Western Division title in 1974. Had the WFL been more of a success, the Sun would have been a viable club.

                                                        The Story

The Atlanta Chiefs played at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium from 1967 to 1973 before eventually folding in 1973. Even though the Atlanta Chiefs were a strong team in the 1973 season, it wasn't enough to keep the red and white in Atlanta. With players like Barry Lynch & Art Welch donning the red and white in Atlanta, the Atlanta Chiefs should have been able to fill seats. The reality however was much different and with low attendance, the Atlanta Chiefs soon folded and became no more.

                                                              The Story

The best player on the Chiefs (and probably in the entire Federal League), Ned Braden is misunderstood by his teammates, fans ("I hate you Braden!" shouted by a fan during pre-game intros is one of the classic opening lines of the movie) and his wife. It makes no sense why the Princeton-educated Braden is playing in this grunt minor league - and his refusal to fight and overall attitude lead him to be benched and cast aside by his teammates and the fans.

However Braden's shining moment comes at the very end when his brilliant striptease performance simultaneously mocks the absurdity of the fighting that's taking place around him, and wins the hearts back of the fans and his wife when he finally accepts that he's just a character in a show.

Following the large North American TV audience of over 1 million for the 1966 World Cup led American sports investors to believe there was an untapped market for soccer in the U.S. and Canada. FIFA sanctioned 2 leagues, the United Soccer Association (USA…get it…) and National Professional Soccer League. Neither had much independent success, so the two leagues merged on December 7, 1967 to form the North American Soccer League (NASL). With kitschy American spins on The Beautiful Game, like calling the final the Soccer Bowl, the league saw moderate success through the 60s and 70s. Popularity peaked in the late 1970s and 80s with big name players like Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and George Best joining the league after storied international careers. Ultimately, the league folded in 1985, but not without leaving a string of absurd team names, logos and uniforms.

The Miami Screaming Eagles entered the league in 1972, playing at the Hollywood Sportatorium. The Screaming Eagles graced the ice until 1972 when the team folded due to their franchise agreement in the WHA being terminated.

Even though the San Diego Jaws were a strong team in the 1976 NASL season, it wasn't enough to keep the gold and blue in San Diego. With players like Alan Mayer & Art Welch donning the gold and blue in San Diego, the San Diego Jaws should have been able to fill seats. The reality however what much different and with low attendance, the San Diego Jaws soon folded and became no more.

The league folded in 1976 after the demise of several franchises and the inability of the Montreal franchise to play home games in 1976 because of the Summer Olympics.

Another model was the World Hockey Association (1972-1979), co-founded by Davidson in 1971, which had already become a thorn in the side of the National Hockey League by challenging the established circuit for top free agents and expansion markets. To be relevant, Davidson needed the WFL to work in major media markets like New York City. But the New York Stars, a franchise given away for free by Davidson to one of his World Hockey Association connections, turned out to be one of the WFL’s biggest misfires.

They played at the 30,000-seat State Fair Stadium. Fun fact: Larry King, of future CNN fame, was one of their broadcasters.

In 1974, the team played seven home games at the Gator Bowl Stadium in Jacksonville. The Sharks roster was a mixture of rookies such as Mike Townsend, Eddie McAshan and Reggie Oliver, and veterans like Ike Lassiter, John Stofa, Drew Buie, and former University of Florida All-American lineman Larry Gagner. Six weeks into the season, the team had a 2-4 record, and owner Fran Monaco fired head coach Bud Asher, replacing him with Charlie Tate. Results did not improve, as the Sharks went 2-6 in their remaining games.

The Wheels lost their first 10 games of the season.  On September 11, 1974 the Wheels travelled to Orlando and shocked the Florida Blazers 15-14 for the first and only win in franchise history. The Blazers, coached by Jack Pardee, were one of the WFL’s best teams and would later appear in the 1974 championship game. The Wheels lost their next three to drop to 1-13 before the club’s financial problems sunk the club. The WFL folded the team on October 10th, 1974, cancelling the six remaining games on Detroit’s schedule.  The WFL itself folded a little over a year later in October 1975.

During this period the team attracted many soccer stars, such as Portuguese superstar Eusébio, and were successful enough that they won Soccer Bowl '76 – in a 3–0 victory over the Minnesota Kicks – at the Kingdome in Seattle. However, the NASL was never comfortable with the Croatia link (an obvious ethnic connection). League executives lobbied CBS to ensure they were only referred to as "Toronto" in the televised coverage of Soccer Bowl. In 1978, the team was bought out, leaving the Toronto Blizzard in the NASL, while Toronto Croatia returned to the NSL. The club's successes, despite the instabilities it found in each of the leagues in which it had played, showed what a small ethnic group could accomplish in the North American sport. The 1976 team was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame as its 2010 Team of Distinction.

In 1970, after two struggling seasons, the Miami Floridians were purchased by a new owner, retired ad man Ned Doyle (best known for his imaginative Volkswagen ads) who wanted to make the team more regional (the team started playing games all over Florida: Miami, Tampa/St. Pete, Jacksonville, and West Palm Beach) - thus a name change was in order to just "The Floridians." Team colors were also changed to a bolder scheme of magenta, orange and black.

Doyle used his advertising background to try and get more fans through the turnstiles. The Floridians became known for their scantily clad ball girls and crazy promotions. One program advertising the team's next two home games didn't even bother to mention the two teams they were going to play....instead, the program stated: "FREE PANTYHOSE--The Floridians return to the Convention Hall Thursday, Nov. 5, for Ladies Night, with pantyhose given away to the first 500 ladies through the turnstiles."

Other Floridians promotions included: live turkeys for Thanksgiving, 15 pounds of smoked fish (to one lucky fan!), 57 pounds of Irish potatoes on "Irish Night," 53 pumpkin pies, and free kegs of beer.

Despite the antics, the team's attendance never steadied and the franchise folded after the 71-72 season.
