1970 Virginia Squires Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
As with most teams in the ABA, the Squires began life as another team, first as the Oakland Oaks and then the Washington Caps upon the franchise's move to DC. They became the Squires the following year (1970-71 season) after yet another move to Roanoke, VA after being pushed out of town by the Baltimore Bullets who wanted to move their NBA franchise to Washington and of course be the only game in town.
The 1972–73 season marked the beginning of the Virginia Squires downturn. Although blessed with a combination of Julius Erving ("Dr. J") and a young George Gervin, the duo only played together late in the season and during the summer of 1973, Dr. J was sold to the New York Nets for cash. Soon, the Squires' attendance fell through the floor and never recovered, folding just after the 1975-76 season.

Regular price $34.00 Save $-34.00The Story
The San Diego Conquistadors (the "Q's" to their loyal fans and sportswriters) were an ABA rarity: an ABA expansion team. Their players for their first season (1972-73) were unprotected players taken from other ABA teams in a special expansion draft. Given the talent available in this pool, one national basketball publication predicted that in their first season, the Conquistadors would be "the worst team in organized professional basketball history. They turned out to be not so bad, but nevertheless lasted only a few seasons, folding in 1975.

1973 Minnesota Fighting Saints Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
The Minnesota Fighting Saints were one of the World Hockey Association's (WHA) original 12 teams, beginning play in 1973. The Saints never missed the playoffs nor had a losing record and the team always drew more fans than the WHA average. On a few occasions, they even drew more attendance than their NHL rivals, the North Stars.
The Saints were one of the first pro hockey teams to boast a mostly American roster, favoring Minnesota-born players specifically. The team also had several ties to the movie Slap Shot, as controversial forward Bill 'Goldie' Goldthorpe, who was the inspiration for Ogie Ogilthorpe in the movie and Jack Carlson, who along with his brothers were the inspiration for the Hanson Brothers, both played for the Saints. Also, current veteran NHL coach Bruce Boudreau, who made an appearance as a player in Slap Shot, made his professional debut with the Saints, playing 30 games in the 1975-76 season.
Despite their on-ice success, the Saints were unable to secure a lucrative TV deal and eventually succumbed to financial woes and folded mid-season in 1976.

1969 Carolina Cougars Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
In the late 1960's, none of North Carolina's metropolitan areas were large enough to support a professional sports franchise on its own, so the Cougars were branded as a "regional" team and despite being technically based out of Greensboro, played their "home" games in a variety of arenas across the state.
Although the Cougars were moderately successful overall during their run from 1969-74 and had one of the most loyal fan bases in the ABA, talks toward an ABA-NBA merger were in the final stages, and it had become apparent that a "regional" franchise would not be viable in the NBA.
The Cougars were sold to a consortium of New York businessmen and moved to St. Louis for the '74-75 season and renamed the Spirit of St. Louis.

The famed Whalers franchise was created in November 1971 when the World Hockey Association awarded a franchise to an ownership group in Boston. Bolstered by a mostly American roster (very unusual for that era), the Whalers cruised to a WHA championship in their first season.
Despite their success, the team was fourth priority at their home Boston Garden behind the NHL Bruins, NBA Celtics and even the AHL Braves. Fed up with the treatment, the owners decided to move the team to Hartford (who just opened up a brand new Civic Center) becoming the Hartford Whalers.

Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
After a single season hiatus where Pittsburgh's ABA franchise moved to Minnesota, they returned back in 1969 as the Pittsburgh Pipers once again. A fresh start with a name change came for 1970-71 as the Pittsburgh Condors - but that didn't seem to improve things for the franchise as they had two terrible losing seasons, and to add insult to injury, became infamous for two promotional stunts (including giving away every unsold seat for free during one losing streak that sadly still only filled the arena 75%) that went terribly awry. The ABA cancelled the Pittsburgh franchise after the 1971-72 season.

The Miami Floridians began as the Minnesota Muskies, a charter ABA franchise. In order to pay leftover debts in Minnesota, Shields sold Rookie of the Year Mel Daniels to the Indiana Pacers, a deal now reckoned as the most lopsided trade in ABA history. After just 4 years in FLA, showing no progress in profitability, the team was disbanded in June 1972.

1972 WHA League Logo Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
The World Hockey Association operated from 1972-1979. Although the WHA was not the first league to attempt to challenge the NHL's supremacy, it was by far the most successful. The league tried to capitalize on the lack of hockey teams in a number of major American cities and mid-level Canadian cities, and also hoped to attract the best players by paying more than NHL owners would. The WHA successfully challenged the NHL's reserve clause, which bound players to their NHL teams even without a valid contract, allowing players in both leagues greater freedom of movement. Sixty-seven players jumped from the NHL to the WHA in the first year, led by star forward Bobby Hull, whose ten-year, $2.75 million contract was a record at the time. The WHA also took the initiative to sign European players.
The WHA had an acrimonious relationship with the NHL, resulting in numerous legal battles, as well as competition for control of players and markets. In spite of this, merger talks began almost immediately, as the WHA was constantly unstable, with franchises occasionally relocating or folding in the middle of the season. NHL owners voted down a 1977 plan to merge six WHA teams into the NHL before a 1979 merger was approved. As a result, the WHA ceased operations, and four teams joined the NHL for the 1979-80 season: the Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets.

1972 New York Raiders Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
Capitalizing on the lack of hockey teams in a number of major American cities and mid-level Canadian cities, the WHA was the first major league to compete with the NHL. The New York Raiders were intended to be the WHA's flagship franchise, and the team was initially slated to play in the brand-new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island. However, Nassau County was holding out for an NHL franchise and when the NHL finally responded by hastily awarding a franchise to Long Island—the New York Islanders - the lease with the Coliseum was structured in such a way to effectively lock out non-NHL teams, forcing the Raiders to play at Madison Square Garden.
Unsurprisingly, the Raiders couldn't compete with the Rangers and due to poor attendance, the owners defaulted, and the league ended up taking control of the team midway through the season. Following the season, New York real estate mogul Ralph Brent bought the team and renamed it the New York Golden Blades.

The Aztecs had mixed success between 1974 and 1981, when the team folded due to instability within its ownership group.

When a group of Baltimore businessmen purchased the struggling Memphis Sounds franchise in the summer of '75, the new owners first named their team the "Baltimore Hustlers." Soon after this directive, the "Baltimore Hustlers" quietly became the "Baltimore Claws" and the great Hustlers name and logo was soon forgotten. Until now.

1973 New York Golden Blades Tee
Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
After a failed season as the New York Titans, New York real estate mogul Ralph Brent bought the team and renamed it the New York Golden Blades. The team replaced their original orange and blue uniforms with purple and gold uniforms of a unique design, and to coincide with the new identity, the team started the season wearing white skates with gold-colored blades.
The situation improved very little from the previous season; at times, the Golden Blades played before crowds of only 500 people (in an 18,000-seat arena). Sinking in debt, Brent surrendered the team to the league in late November, just twenty games into the season, and the WHA decided to move the team mid-season to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, renaming it the Jersey Knights.

The best player on the Chiefs (and probably in the entire Federal League), Ned Braden is misunderstood by his teammates, fans ("I hate you Braden!" shouted by a fan during pre-game intros is one of the classic opening lines of the movie) and his wife. It makes no sense why the Princeton-educated Braden is playing in this grunt minor league - and his refusal to fight and overall attitude lead him to be benched and cast aside by his teammates and the fans.
However Braden's shining moment comes at the very end when his brilliant striptease performance simultaneously mocks the absurdity of the fighting that's taking place around him, and wins the hearts back of the fans and his wife when he finally accepts that he's just a character in a show.
