The Story

The story of how the Brooklyn Dodgers came to be known as "The Bums" takes us back to a cab ride in 1939 when sports cartoonist Willard Mullin of the New York World Telegram asked a cab driver how the Dodgers were doing. The cabbie replied, “Dem Bums are bums.” The encounter gave Mullin an idea, and he soon developed a cartoon character, the “Brooklyn Bum,” to symbolize the team (read: they were awful). To make things even more embarrassing for the Dodgers, circus clown Emmett Kelly, from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, often appeared at Ebbets Field as the Dodgers unofficial mascot at that time.

Now the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL, the franchise started as the Cleveland Rams in the AFL for the 1936 season and wore red and black. Following the conclusion of the season, the team moved to the NFL and switched to their now classic gold and blue.

The Tigers franchise was originally awarded to Rochester as a charter member of AFL II, but were shifted to Brooklyn at the last minute. While Ebbets Field was slated to be the home stadium for the Tigers, the team never played a game there. Their only game played in New York City was at Yankee Stadium before a mid-season move back to Rochester. The team folded along with the league after the 1937 season.

The Story

Awarded an inactive franchise in Boston in July 1932, owner George Preston Marshall originally named the team the "Braves" because it used Braves Field (home of the National League Boston baseball team). When the team moved to Fenway Park in July 1933, the name was changed to Redskins. A bizarre situation occurred in 1936, when the Redskins won the NFL Eastern division championship but Marshall, unhappy with the fan support in Boston, moved the championship game against Green Bay to the Polo Grounds in New York. Their home field advantage taken away by their owner, the Redskins lost. Not surprisingly, the Redskins moved to Washington, D.C., for the 1937 season. Games were played in Griffith Stadium with the opener on September 16, 1937, being played under flood lights.

The Boston Shamrocks played in AFL II for both of the league's only seasons of 1936 and 1937 and also played the 1938 season as an independent club. The team split their home games between Braves Field and Fenway Park. The Shamrocks were a successful franchise in the AFL, winning the league championship in 1936 and even outdrew the NFL's Boston Redskins in attendance, which prompted owner George Preston Marshall to move the Redskins to Washington, D.C., where the franchise remains to this day.

The Story

A true baseball entrepreneur, Herb Hunter, who organized the Tour of Japan, became a something of a “Japanese Tour Impresario” and is largely credited with getting Japanese baseball established on a solid foundation in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He put together three successful tours before Lefty O’Doul took over in 1934. Hunter was known as “Baseball’s Ambassador to the Orient."

There was only one thing lacking from the 1931 tour: the presence of Babe Ruth, who was hugely popular in Japan. The Sultan of Swat would return for the 1934 Tour.
