The Story

The history and tradition of the New York Giants is linked to pro football itself for one might have perished without the other in the early days of the National Football League. The late Tim Mara, now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, purchased a franchise for $500 in 1925 and before the Giants' first season had ended, he had invested another $25,000 to keep the franchise alive. A team in New York was thus assured. To a young NFL that was seeking national media and fan attendance, a team in the nation's largest city was an absolute must. The value of New York exposure was clearly demonstrated in December of the first season when more than 70,000 turned out at the Polo Grounds to see the Giants play the Chicago Bears, who had just signed Red Grange, the most famous pro football player of the 1920s.

    The Story

The franchise that became the Bears was founded by businessman A.E. Staley in 1920 and was first known as the Decatur (Illinois) Staleys. George Halas became player-coach of the new team, which he relocated to Chicago in 1921 after Staley handed the young franchise over to him. (Halas, affectionately known as “Papa Bear,” prowled the sidelines as head coach until 1968.) The team won the American Professional Football Association (APFA) championship in its first season in Chicago, and it was renamed the Bears in 1922, the same year the APFA became the NFL. The early Chicago teams established a rivalry with the Green Bay Packers, which became one of the sport’s most storied feuds. Led by a dominant rushing attack that featured future Hall of Fame backs Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski, the Bears captured NFL championships in 1932 and 1933, the former of which was won in the first play-off game in league history, a 9–0 victory over the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans.

        The Story

George Lewis "Tex" Rickard, president of Madison Square Garden, was awarded an NHL franchise for the 1926–27 season to compete with the now-defunct New York Americans, who had begun play at the Garden the previous season. The Americans (also known as the "Amerks") proved to be an even greater success than expected during their inaugural season, leading Rickard to pursue a second team for the Garden despite promising the Amerks that they were going to be the only hockey team to play there. The new team was quickly nicknamed "Tex's Rangers"

          The Story

In 1932, the NHL let grain merchant James E. Norris, who had made two previous unsuccessful bids to buy an NHL team, purchase the Falcons. Norris' first act was to choose a new name for the team—the Red Wings. Earlier in the century, Norris had been a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA), a multi-sport club whose winged-wheel emblem derived from its cycling roots, and whose hockey team won the first Stanley Cup in 1893. Norris decided that a red version of the MAAA "Winged Wheelers" logo was perfect for a team playing in the "Motor City" and on October 5, 1932, the club was renamed the Red Wings. The Red Wings played at the Detroit Olympia.

            The Story

On May 1, 1926, the NHL awarded an expansion franchise for Chicago to a syndicate headed by former football star Huntington Hardwick of Boston. At the same meeting, Hardwick arranged the purchase of the players of the Portland Rosebuds of the Western Hockey League for $100,000 from WHL president Frank Patrick in a deal brokered by Boston Bruins' owner Charles AdamsHowever, only one month later, Hardwick's group sold out to Chicago coffee tycoon Frederic McLaughlin. McLaughlin had been a commander with the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division during World War I.This division was nicknamed the "Blackhawk Division" after a Native American of the Sauk nation, Black Hawk, who was a prominent figure in the history of Illinois. McLaughlin named the new hockey team in honor of the military unit. The blackhawks originally played in the Chicago Coliseum.

                The Story

In 1924, at the convincing of Boston grocery magnate Charles Adams, the National Hockey League decided to expand to the United States. Adams' first act was to hire Art Ross, a former star player and innovator, as general manager. Ross was the face of the franchise for the next thirty years, including four separate stints as coach. Adams directed Ross to come up with a nickname that would portray an untamed animal displaying speed, agility, and cunning. Ross came up with "Bruins", an Old English word used for brown bears. The team's bearlike nickname also went along with the team's original uniform colors of brown and yellow, which came from Adams' grocery chain. The Bruins played at Boston Arena.

                  The Story

A true baseball entrepreneur, Herb Hunter, who organized the Tour of Japan, became a something of a “Japanese Tour Impresario” and is largely credited with getting Japanese baseball established on a solid foundation in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He put together three successful tours before Lefty O’Doul took over in 1934. Hunter was known as “Baseball’s Ambassador to the Orient."

The 1922 team featured such stars as Casey Stengel, Herb Pennock, Waite Hoyt, Amos Strunk, George "Highpockets" Kelly, Irish Meusel and others. This team became the first with major leaguers to lose a game to its Japanese hosts.
