Despite featuring legendary Syracuse University players in their lineup like Paul Gait, the Smash flopped at the box office and struggled to put a good product on the field, finishing 6-30 during its three-year run - good for last in the standings each season. The lasting image of the team's on-going roster issues was the time it had to pull a 43-year-old fan/practice goalie out of the War Memorial stands to fill in during a game when the regular goalie got hurt. The team folded after the 2000 season.

Founded in 1946 and originally known as the Syracuse Nationals, they are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA and one of only eight (out of 23) to survive the league's first decade to become the Phildelphia 76ers.
The 76ers have had a prominent history. They have won three NBA championships, with their first coming as the Syracuse Nationals in 1955. The second title came in 1967, a team which was led by Chamberlain. The third title came in 1983, won by a team led by Erving and Malone. The 76ers have only been back to the NBA Finals once since then: in 2001, where they were led by Iverson and lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games.

The Syracuse Blazers played in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) from 1973-1977.
If the teams of the NAHL (1973-1977) look familiar, it's because the league served as the inspiration for one of the greatest sports movies of all time: Slap Shot. Ned Dowd, who played for the Johnston Jets, was the brother of the film's screenwriter, Nancy Dowd who was inspired to write the screenplay based off of Ned's experiences in a league where bench-clearing brawls and fights between players and fans were the norm on Friday and Saturday nights in arenas in cities like Syracuse, Binghamton and Erie.
The league's championship trophy, the Lockhart Cup, was last awarded on April 10, 1977, to the Syracuse Blazers and has since gone missing. Its last known whereabouts was reported to be in the basement of Danny Belisle, the coach of the Blazers in the 1976–77 season.
