The San Diego Conquistadors (the "Q's" to their loyal fans and sportswriters) were an ABA rarity: an ABA expansion team. Their players for their first season (1972-73) were unprotected players taken from other ABA teams in a special expansion draft. Given the talent available in this pool, one national basketball publication predicted that in their first season, the Conquistadors would be "the worst team in organized professional basketball history. They turned out to be not so bad, but nevertheless lasted only a few seasons, folding in 1975.

1974 San Diego Mariners Tee

The San Diego Mariners entered the league in 1974 after the franchise moved from Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The team name changed, but the Mariners kept the blue, orange and white color scheme from the Knights.
After the 1976-77 season, owner Ray Kroc (of McDonald's fame), who also owned the Padres, sold the team to a group who planned to move it to Florida. However after three failed attempts to secure an arena, the Mariners folded just before training camp opened in the fall of 1977. Fans who put down deposits for season tickets never got their money back.

1990 San Diego Gulls Tee

The San Diego Gulls (1990–95) were a minor league professional ice hockey team out of the IHL. The team, the second to use the Gulls nickname, was founded in 1990 as part of the International Hockey League. The Gulls played at the San Diego Sports Arena. In the 1992–93 season, the Gulls won the Fred A. Huber Trophy finishing first place overall in the regular season, setting an IHL record of 132 points earned as a team. The Gulls reached the Turner Cup finals, led by goaltender Clint Malarchuk, but were swept in four games by the Fort Wayne Komets.

The San Diego Barracudas were a southern Californian professional inline hockey team which existed from 1993 through 1996. The Barracudas were a part of Roller Hockey International. The team's home games were played at the San Diego Sports Arena. They relocated to Ontario, California in the 1998 and 1999 seasons, known as the Ontario Barracudas to replace the Palm Desert/Ontario Silvercats (to also represented Palm Springs, California).

With players like Laszlo Harsanyi & Gerry Ingram donning the gold and blue in San Diego, the San Diego Sockers should have been able to fill seats. The reality however was much different and with low attendance, the San Diego Sockers soon folded and became no more.
