1972 New York Raiders Tee
The Story
Capitalizing on the lack of hockey teams in a number of major American cities and mid-level Canadian cities, the WHA was the first major league to compete with the NHL.Ā The New York Raiders were intended to be the WHA's flagship franchise, and the team was initially slated to play in the brand-newĀ Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island.Ā However, Nassau County was holding out for an NHL franchise and when theĀ NHL finally responded by hastily awarding a franchise to Long IslandātheĀ New York Islanders -Ā the lease with the Coliseum was structured in such a way to effectively lock out non-NHL teams, forcing the Raiders to play at Madison Square Garden.
Unsurprisingly, the Raiders couldn't compete with the Rangers and due to poor attendance, the owners defaulted, and the league ended up taking control of the team midway through the season. Following the season, New York real estate mogul Ralph Brent bought the team and renamed it theĀ New York Golden Blades.
