"The Chicago Blitz were a hard working group of guys. I enjoyed it. The only problem was, the man who bought the team never paid anybody, including the coaches. We had to chip in to buy toilet paper for the restrooms."
- Marv Levy, former Chicago Blitz head coach
One of the original 12 United States Football League franchises, the Chicago Blitz were one of the strongest teams in the USFL's inaugural season, finishing tied for first place in their division. But despite their success on the field, they averaged only 18,100 fans that season (the league average was about 30,000). As a result, the Blitz became part of what many call the craziest trade in sports history.
In the seasons to follow, attendance only decreased, which prompted the ownership group, who was losing millions of dollars each season, to finally give up and sold the team to the league for pennies on the dollar. The team folded for good prior to the 1986 season.
