The Story
Capitalizing on the lack of hockey teams in a number of major American cities and mid-level Canadian cities, the WHA was the first major league to compete with the NHL. The Phoenix Roadrunners entered the league in 1974, playing at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Roadrunners consistently faced financial issues - at one point, the team was forced to sell players just to pay the bills. The Roadrunners finally gave up and folded at the end of its third season in 1977.
