The incredible saga of the Green Bay Packers began in August 1919, when the Indian Packing Company agreed to sponsor a local pro football team under the direction of Earl (Curly) Lambeau. In 1921, the Packers were granted a membership in the new National Football League. Today, they rank as the third oldest team in pro football. The long and storied history of the Green Bay team is one of struggle, until comparatively recent, for financial survival off the field and playing stability on the field. The franchise that became the Bears was founded by businessman A.E. Staley in 1920 and was first known as the Decatur (Illinois) Staleys. George Halas became player-coach of the new team, which he relocated to Chicago in 1921 after Staley handed the young franchise over to him. (Halas, affectionately known as “Papa Bear,” prowled the sidelines as head coach until 1968.) The team won the American Professional Football Association (APFA) championship in its first season in Chicago, and it was renamed the Bears in 1922, the same year the APFA became the NFL. The early Chicago teams established a rivalry with the Green Bay Packers, which became one of the sport’s most storied feuds. Led by a dominant rushing attack that featured future Hall of Fame backs Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski, the Bears captured NFL championships in 1932 and 1933, the former of which was won in the first play-off game in league history, a 9–0 victory over the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans.

Regular price $34.00 Save $0.00The Story
In 1924, at the convincing of Boston grocery magnate Charles Adams, the National Hockey League decided to expand to the United States. Adams' first act was to hire Art Ross, a former star player and innovator, as general manager. Ross was the face of the franchise for the next thirty years, including four separate stints as coach. Adams directed Ross to come up with a nickname that would portray an untamed animal displaying speed, agility, and cunning. Ross came up with "Bruins", an Old English word used for brown bears. The team's bearlike nickname also went along with the team's original uniform colors of brown and yellow, which came from Adams' grocery chain. The Bruins played at Boston Arena.

1925 New York Football Founding Year Hoodie

The history and tradition of the New York Giants is linked to pro football itself for one might have perished without the other in the early days of the National Football League. The late Tim Mara, now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, purchased a franchise for $500 in 1925 and before the Giants' first season had ended, he had invested another $25,000 to keep the franchise alive. A team in New York was thus assured. To a young NFL that was seeking national media and fan attendance, a team in the nation's largest city was an absolute must. The value of New York exposure was clearly demonstrated in December of the first season when more than 70,000 turned out at the Polo Grounds to see the Giants play the Chicago Bears, who had just signed Red Grange, the most famous pro football player of the 1920s.

In 1932, the NHL let grain merchant James E. Norris, who had made two previous unsuccessful bids to buy an NHL team, purchase the Falcons. Norris' first act was to choose a new name for the team—the Red Wings. Earlier in the century, Norris had been a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA), a multi-sport club whose winged-wheel emblem derived from its cycling roots, and whose hockey team won the first Stanley Cup in 1893. Norris decided that a red version of the MAAA "Winged Wheelers" logo was perfect for a team playing in the "Motor City" and on October 5, 1932, the club was renamed the Red Wings. The Red Wings played at the Detroit Olympia.

The franchise was founded in 1930 and was based in Portsmouth, Ohio. Known as the Spartans, the team was one of two (with the Green Bay Packers) small-town members of the early NFL. The Spartans were moderately successful and played in the first play-off game in league history—a 9–0 loss to the Chicago Bears at the end of the 1932 season. In 1934 the franchise was sold and relocated to Detroit, where it took on the name “Lions” to complement baseball's Detroit Lions. In the Lions’ first season in Detroit, team ownership instituted a long-standing tradition when they scheduled a game on Thanksgiving Day, which has featured a Lions’ home game every year since (except during WWII). In 1935 the Lions won their first NFL championship, behind the play of single-wing tailback Earl (“Dutch”) Clark.

Regular price $58.00 Save $0.00The Story
The San Francisco 49ers were charter members of the All-America Football Conference, which began play in 1946. Had it not been for the Browns, who won four championships and lost only four games in the league's four years of operation, the 49ers would have been the AAFC's dominant team. Their cumulative record was an excellent 39-15-2. They handed the Browns two of their four defeats but finished second each year. Even in attendance, the 49ers were second best in the AAFC next to Cleveland. When the 49ers moved to the NFL in 1950 following the collapse of the AAFC, their original management team -- co-owners Anthony J. Morabito and Victor P. Morabito and general manager Louis Spadia -- remained intact. The 49ers in the 1950s boasted of some of the game's great individual stars: quarterbacks Frankie Albert and Y. A. Tittle, running backs Hugh McElhenny, Joe Perry and John Henry Johnson, tackle Bob St. Clair and defensive tackle Leo Nomellini. But the closest they came to a championship in their first two decades of NFL play was in 1957, when they tied Detroit for the NFL Western division crown but lost in a playoff.

Historic Balboa Stadium was expanded to 34,000 capacity to accommodate the Chargers.

1960 New York Football Founding Year Hoodie
Regular price $58.00 Save $0.00The Story
Established as one of the founding teams of the upstart American Football League (AFL) in 1960, the franchise—known as the Titans until 1963—was marred by financial struggles and athletic mediocrity as the team competed with the older Giants franchise in the New York market. One of the lone bright spots in the team’s early years was wide receiver Don Maynard, who joined the team in its inaugural season and would set most major receiving records during the course of his Hall of Fame career. In 1963 the newly renamed Jets hired head coach Weeb Ewbank (who had guided the Colts to championships in the late 1950s) and in 1965 acquired Namath, which marked the beginning of the team’s move to respectability.

In 1966, the NHL announced that six expansion teams would be added as a new division for the 1967–68 season, officially because of a general desire to expand the league to new markets, but also to squelch the Western Hockey League's threat to turn into a major league. The San Francisco Seals were one such team from the WHL. The NHL awarded an expansion team to Barry Van Gerbig for the San Francisco Bay area. Van Gerbig decided to purchase the WHL club with the intent of bringing them into the NHL as an expansion team the following season.

When the NHL decided to expand for the 1967–68 season amid rumblings that the Western Hockey League (WHL) was proposing to turn itself into a major league and compete for the Stanley Cup, Canadian entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke paid the NHL $2 million to place one of the six expansion teams in Los Angeles. Following a fan contest to name the team, Cooke chose the name Kings because he wanted his club to take on "an air of royalty," and picked the original team colors of purple (or "Forum Blue", as it was later officially called) and gold because they were colors traditionally associated with royalty. The Kings played at the newly built Forum in Los Angeles.

1967 St. Louis Founding Year Tee

The Blues were one of the six teams added to the NHL in the 1967 expansion. St. Louis was the last of the six expansion teams to gain entry into the League; the market was chosen over Baltimore at the insistence of the Chicago Black Hawks. The Black Hawks' owners, James D. Norris and Arthur Wirtz, also owned the decrepit St. Louis Arena. They sought to unload the arena, which had not been well-maintained since the 1940s, and thus pressed the NHL to give the franchise to St. Louis, which had not submitted a formal expansion bid. NHL president Clarence Campbell said during the 1967 expansion meetings, "We want a team in St. Louis because of the city's geographical location and the fact that it has an adequate building."

The Whalers franchise started as the 'New England Whalers,' playing in Boston as one of the WHA's original teams in 1972. The team held the WHA's best record through the first season of play, eventually going on a run to win the inaugural Avco World Trophy (the WHA championship).
The club played many of its first season's home games at the Boston Garden and the Whalers found themselves fourth in priority for dates behind the NHL's Bruins, Boston Celtics and even the American Hockey League's Boston Braves. Fed up with the situation, the owners decided to move the team elsewhere: Hartford, Connecticut where a brand new arena was already being built. On January 11, 1975 the team played its first game at the Hartford Civic Center in front of a sellout crowd.
